VIEQUES, PR -- John Hix, the Canadian-born architect who developed the "eco-hip," retreat the Hix Island House, sees Vieques as largely undeveloped gem in the Caribbean, a sort of "Central Park" in the midest of a highly developed region.
VIEQUES, Puerto Rico - With just two frying pans and a toaster in his first restaurant some 40 years ago, Hugh Duffy, who will be 90 next year, is poised to run four restaurants on this Caribbean island.
There is such an abundance of mangoes on the island in July and August, that we simply can't eat them all, so we gather the rotting ones from the ground, put them in a garbage bag and feed them to herds of wild horses who roam the island.
Here I am feeding a group just off the road to Green Beach.
Horses love mangoes and in Vieques in the summer there are so many that they rot in streets. Sometimes friendly humans bring mangoes to horses as a special treat.
About the Show
Welcome to the launch of Vieques.TV, a new Web video series about the Caribbean island of Vieques, located 8 miles off the eastern end of Puerto Rico. Kathy and I have had a home on the island since 2004 and have been delighted to share our experiences with so many friends and family.
Vieques.TV both a personal travelogue and labor of love for the island. I shoot the videos on a small Canon Vixia and have my crew at Beet.TV do some nifty editing in New York.
Thanks for watching and stay in touch. To reach me, send an email to vieques(at)plesser.com
Sun Bay is the first of the Puerto Rican Commonwealth beaches located just east of the town of Esperanza. Wild horses live near the beach and often venture to the rest under palm trees and roll in the sand.
